Why Bluesky threads need splitting
Bluesky's post schema caps each post's text at 300 graphemes (with a separate 3,000-byte ceiling on the raw text, which mainly matters for emoji-heavy posts), per the app.bsky.feed.post lexicon. A grapheme is what a reader perceives as one character -- most letters and punctuation count as one, but some emoji made of several code points still count as a single grapheme. Posting anything longer means breaking it into a thread: one post with the opening idea, followed by reply posts that continue it.
How this tool splits your text
Paste your full text, choose a numbering style, and the tool breaks it into posts that each stay under the limit. It counts graphemes the same way Bluesky does (using the browser's Intl.Segmenter where available, which correctly treats multi-part emoji as one character), and it breaks at word boundaries wherever possible instead of cutting words in half. If you turn on numbering, a little room is reserved at the end of each post for the "1/5" or "(1/5)" suffix so the numbered post still fits the limit.
Tips for a thread people actually read
- Make the first post stand alone. It is the one that gets shared and shown in feeds -- it should make sense and create interest even if nobody reads the replies.
- Break at natural pauses. This tool breaks on whitespace, but reading your output and adjusting a paragraph break manually often reads better than a purely mechanical cut.
- Keep each post postable on its own. Avoid splitting a single sentence awkwardly across two posts when a short rewrite would avoid it.
- Check the last post before you publish. Run it through the Bluesky Post Checker if you want a second confirmation of length and formatting.
Privacy first
Everything you type or paste is split by your own browser's JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded to SkyyCast, stored, or sent to any other service, and no account is needed. Closing or reloading the page discards it.
